Bird Count for Kids 2018

January 13, 2018 @ 8:30 am - 10:30 am

Nature NL, in collaboration with Jared Clarke of Bird the Rock, is excited to be hosting a bird count for kids on Saturday January 13th 2018. This is part of the Christmas Bird Count for Kids program, but don’t worry, January counts are allowed too!

Christmas Bird Counts are a long-standing tradition in Canada and the US and this morning event will bring the fun and learning to the younger set. Meet at 8:30am in the Multi-Purpose Room at HGR Mews Community Centre, 40 Mundy Pond Road, St. John’s NL. After an introduction, we will then walk over to Mundy Pond to start the count. The count involves walking around the area, listening and looking for any and all birds, and recording everything we see during that time. We will submit the data to Bird Studies Canada and eBird afterwards, just like all the other counts across the country, so we’re a small part of a very big citizen science project!

Please dress very warmly (birding often involves a lot of standing!). If you have binoculars, field guide, or a spotting scope, you can bring those as well. We will provide a few extra pairs of binoculars and some small field guides for kids. If you have any questions, please message Nature NL on our Facebook page.
