Nature NL public talk – Randal Greene – Restoring coasts

September 20 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm

On Thursday September 20th 2018, 7:30-9pm, Randal Greene will speak about restoring Newfoundland and Labrador’s coasts. Join us for our first talk of the season! We have a new, larger location as well – in MUN’s Arts and Administration Building, Room A 1043.

Coastal Restoration Planning in Newfoundland and Labrador: Identification and Prioritization of Sites

A new World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Canada project will restore coastal habitats for capelin, Arctic char and Atlantic salmon. The project will also coordinate coastal restoration and enhancement work at sites in Newfoundland and Labrador. Currently, the team is reaching out to sources of traditional, local and other expert knowledge, and gathering relevant information on the fish species, other biotic features, existing degradation, threats, and underlying physical geography. One of the things the project team would like to do is identify and prioritize potential sites.

The talk will provide an overview of this broad new project, describe the prioritization, and invite the audience to contribute their expertise. The audience is invited to suggest or discuss candidate sites or sources of knowledge. Possible activities may include planting vegetation, aggregate filling, erosion control infrastructure installation, and removing barriers to fish migration.
