Alien Ant Invasions: the origin and impact of the stinging European Fire Ant in Newfoundland

Dr Barry Hicks attended Memorial University of Newfoundland where he received BSc (Hons) degree in 1989 and an MSc degree 1993; both in Biology.  His MSc research involved looking at using alternative management strategies against the spruce budworm. In 1998, he was recipient of the Rothermere Foundation Fellowship. As a Rothermere Fellow he completed a PhD in Forest Entomology at Edinburgh University, Edinburgh, Scotland.  His main areas of research include: invasive insect species and their impact on the Newfoundland insect fauna, insect population dynamics, biological control using entomopathogenic fungi and pollination by native bees.

 

Since 1993 he has taught first-year university Biology at the College of the North Atlantic in Carbonear.

 

Dr Hicks has 24 papers published in refereed journals and has presented at several national and international conferences.
