October’s species highlight are Newfoundland and Labrador’s migratory birds!🦆🐦🐥🐦‍⬛

🗓️Throughout the month we will be introducing you to some important feathered characters that call Newfoundland home for at least part of the year, the risks they face, and how you can help them!

💧A lot of these species live in and around wetlands, such as bogs, marshes, riverbeds, fens and coastal areas. Some of them even travel as far as the Southern U.S. and South America to winter.

✈️Migration is the annual movement that some animals make between regions where they breed and locations where they spend the rest of the year.

🌤️Migratory birds fly hundreds and thousands of kilometers to find the best habitats for feeding, breeding, and raising their young. This journey is an exhausting one, full of dangers and threats. Tune in every Wednesday in October for more migratory bird facts!

It’s Wednesday which means #WetlandWednesday #SpeciesFeature. This week we welcome the Tri-coloured Bumble Bee (Bombus ternarius)!

As the name suggests, this bee is yellow, orange, and black. It is a ground-nesting social insect whose colony cycle lasts only one season. This orange-belted bumble forages on goldenrods, milkweeds and shrubs such as blueberries or lingonberries.

Like many bees, this species exhibits a complex social structure which includes a reproductive queen and a multitude of sister workers. Jobs such as foraging, nursing and nest maintenance are divided among the workers.

It’s Wednesday which means #WetlandWednesday #SpeciesFeature. This week we welcome the Savannah Sparrow (Passerculus sandwichensis)!

Sparrow a moment to learn about why they are so neat. Savannah sparrows sing slightly different tunes depending on what region of Canada they are from. They learn these unique songs from adult tutors in their home town and pass these songs onto the next generation. There is a peak learning period which occurs during their first summer and right before they have kids. Researchers are able to teach these birds songs from other regions using playback loudspeakers.

So pause a moment before you call someone bird brain - these dudes are pop stars on twig legs.

As the name suggests you can find this bird in open grassy areas, as well as bogs and the edges of marshes with dense groundcover of conifers.

Join us this Saturday for a clean up at Quidi Vidi Lake! We’ll have all the gear (gloves, bags, etc.). All you need to bring is yourself and maybe a friend☺️

What are you doing this weekend? We have 2 events running this Saturday (September 14) - a Bug Walk and a BioBlitz.

🐞The Bug Walk is @10am-12pm at the Botanical Gardens. Explore the Garden with insect and spider experts Sean McCann and Catherine Scott! Learn about bugs and where to find them, the relationships they have with plants and other animals, and more.
Children of all ages are welcome. This event is free of charge. 🕷️

🥾The BioBlitz + Nature Walk is @10am-12:30pm at the Burnt Head Trail in Cupids. We will try to identify as many species as possible with iNaturalist! The hike is a 3.1 km loop. All ages are welcome. Snacks will be provided! Please register using the link in our bio OR on our Facebook event page.🌊

This past weekend, our NatureHood team travelled to the Terra Nova Park Visitors Centre with 27 of our friends from the Association for New Canadians to learn about the Migratory Bird Sanctuary!

🦆The wonderful Parks staff gave us a tour of the visitors centre and taught us all about the marine creatures in their super fun touch tank!

🪼It was a beautiful day for a hike along the coastline while we completed a nature scavenger hunt.

🦐We saw some shorebirds, songbirds, and even got a chance for an up close look at some shrimp and aquatic insects from the Tidal Flats.

🐟Thank you to our NatureHood funder, Nature Canada, for allowing this field trip to happen, and TD Friends of the Environment! Another huge thank you to Parsons & Sons Transportation, and the Terra Nova National Park staff for all of their help throughout the day! We cannot wait to come back and visit again soon!

It’s Wednesday which means #WetlandWednesday #SpeciesFeature. This week we welcome a showy wetland flower, the Blue Flag Iris (Iris vericolor)!

A graceful, sword-leaved plant with purple, downward-curving petals with bold veins. These distinct veins likely guide pollinating insects to the food within.

The Blue Flag is one of the largest flowers you can see in Newfoundland wetlands. They prefer wet and grassy areas.

There are over 300 species of irises in the world, most of which are native to Europe and Asia, but the Blue Flag is native to eastern Canada.

It’s Wednesday which means #WetlandWednesday #SpeciesFeature the Northern Bluet (Enallagma annexum).

This insect is a type of damselfly and is older than the dinosaurs, having been on earth for more than 300 million years. Bluets have six legs, but cannot use them to walk. They are found throughout the world, everywhere except Antarctica.

Instead of an eyeball with one lens, like human eyes, insects have compound eyes, made of many lenses, making them look like a tiny honeycomb. Damselflies have large, compound eyes that occupy most of the head, providing them with excellent vision and the ability to detect movement from a great distance.

The Northern Bluet loves wetlands, including well-vegetated marshes, bog ponds, vernal pools, ponds, lakes, and sometimes slow-flowing streams.

Exciting announcement! From the stories trees tell us over hiking the entire (!) Appalachian Trail to Labrador Night, our Public Talk Series this season is promising.

We are kicking it off with “Stories Trees Tell” on September 19th 7:30pm @memorialuniversity

Trees are long-lived, sessile organisms; not the group one might immediately think of to study the impacts of climate change. Yet, trees record a history of the conditions they have experienced. Their wood can tell us the story of that history, helping us to understand the environment through the tree’s lifespan, disturbances it may have experienced, or the history of an object made of that wood. Trees can also tell us stories by where they do and do not grow. Those stories help us predict where they may (or may not) occur in the future under ongoing global change. Using examples from 1) alpine treeline, 2) fire ecology, and 3) a dendroarchaeology involving a mysterious shipwreck, we will explore how we can turn to trees to understand the past, present, and future of places and things.

It’s Wednesday which means #WetlandWednesday #SpeciesFeature. This week we welcome NL’s Provincial Flower: The Pitcher Plant (Sarracenia purpurea)!

You may have more in common with this plant than you think. Both humans and pitcher plants secrete a rich variety of digestive enzymes and have highly acidic digestive fluids.

While you may enjoy cereal for breakfast, a pitcher plant prefers insects! They lure insects with a sweet-smelling nectar. Once an insect falls into the pitcher, it is almost impossible to get out because the slippery rim, or peristome, prevents insects from gaining the traction needed to escape.

The NL Cabinet designated this carnivorous plant as the official flower of the province in 1954. You can find this provincial flower in the nutrient deficient soils of bogs and fens.
