Last Saturday we visited the beautiful @Terra Nova

Last Saturday we visited the beautiful @Terra Nova National Park Migratory Bird Sanctuary with our friends from Association for New Canadians (ANC) as part of our new #NatureHoodNL pilot project 🌲🐦🐋🌞🪰🦋

We visited the touch tank, went for a lichen scavenger hunt on the Heritage Trail (we looked for the witch, but only found Witch Hair 🧙‍), learned about birding and how to use binoculars with Nature NL's Birding Backpacks, and walked along the Coastal Trail where we put our new found skills to the test!

Thank you to Association for New Canadians - Clarenville and Association for New Canadians- Gander for joining us and to the @Terra Nova National ParkTerra Nova National Park staff for teaching us about Newfoundland and Labrador's marine and bird life!

And of course a thank you to our funders Nature Canada and Environment & Climate Change Canada for supporting our NatureHood project!

World Clean Up Day 2023 is almost here! Join us, with our community partners, in Clarenville, Gander, and St. John's on Saturday, September 16th and Corner Book on Sunday, September 17th. (Please see the posts below for times and locations)
We will provide gloves, bags, etc. All you need to bring is yourself and a friend!

Thanks to everyone who came out to our Moth Night, and very special thanks to the Memorial University Botanical Garden for hosting us! It was not the mothiest evening ever, but we saw quite a few species!

Get a glimpse of some of the nighttime biodiversity of St. John's!

Get a chance to learn about moths with entomologist Dr. Sean McCann and join Nature NL for a fun and informative Moth Night on Saturday, September 9th from 7:30-11:00pm at Memorial University Botanical Garden. Drop in between those hours, or stay the whole time.

Photographs of moths can be submitted to iNaturalist and identified, and will help provide baseline knowledge of local insect diversity and contribute data to our insect monitoring program

This event is entirely outdoors, so dress accordingly.

We had 16 amazing Newcomers and 4 guides in Corner

We had 16 amazing Newcomers and 4 guides in Corner Brook take the vigorous Man in the Mountain Trail hike on Sunday, August 20. This was done in collaboration with the Association for New Canadians - Corner Brook and a rekindle of our previous project, Nature for Newcomers!

Participants were able to learn about plants and animals native to Newfoundland, enjoy the natural beauty and wisdom of the province, and promote Newfoundland’s natural areas as a source of recreation, health, and well-being for all Canadians. They really enjoyed it, expressed gratitude to the organizers and looking forward to the next one.

This past week our NatureHood coordinator (Brianna), executive director (Marie Louise), and volunteer Sebastian, spent 3 days visiting all 6 Association for New Canadians (ANC) summer camps in the St. John’s area. Over 150 kids aged 5-16 were given the opportunity to learn about nature in Newfoundland & Labrador as part of our new NatureHood project. They went on nature walks, did fun nature based scavenger hunts, played birding games, learned about whales, wetlands, wildflowers, and had so much fun outside in nature!

Nature NL would like to congratulate our 2023 Wild

Nature NL would like to congratulate our 2023 Wild Things Scholarship recipient, Sophia Reid from Reidville, NL! Sophia is a graduate of Elwood Regional High who will be attending Memorial University in the fall to pursue studies in environmental science with future career goals of protecting and restoring endangered ecosystems.

Throughout high school, Sophia was an active member in the school Green Team, where she took part in activities such as clean ups, and creating and maintaining green spaces around the school.

Sophia’s evident passion for the environment and commitment to her local community is well aligned with the spirit of the award, in naturalist and educator Dave Snow’s memory, and its goal of assisting young changemakers and environmentalists with their path to continued education.

Nature NL thanks all who applied to the Wild Things Scholarship and extends our best wishes to all in their future endeavors. We also wish to thank @wildland.tours and our anonymous donor, whose support makes this scholarship opportunity possible each year.

Our first event is a Public Talk on insects is happening next Thursday July 6 at 6:30pm at Memorial University Botanical Garden and online.

Last day of our artist feature, but we continue to celebrate #OceanWeek all week! Check out the work by Michael Flaherty from Port Union!

Piece #1: Tidal Weave, 2022
Description: I built a loom that operates by using the movement of the tides. The loom was installed on Linsfort Beach, Co. Donegal, Republic of Ireland, where, over a period of a few weeks, I slowly wove a fabric in collaboration with the natural movement of the ocean. This work postulates a way of working and living that harmonizes with the ocean around us.

Piece #2: Habitat, 2019 to present
Description: I have made a number of amphoras (pre-industrial pottery meant for shipping wine, oil, etc) and placed them at the bottom of the harbour near the community where I live. Over time they will accumulate flora and fauna as they become integrated into the habitat where they exist. A selection of this work was recently shown at The Rooms.

Piece # 3: Weight, 2023 (ongoing)
Description: Much of my work looks at sustainability, material culture, and, perhaps most importantly, the fragility of human and natural systems. Pottery shards, which are omnipresent on the beaches near my home in Newfoundland, wordlessly record the ebb and flow of human activity, and have been a recurring theme in my practice. Specifically, I use beach pottery shards to talk about patterns of settlement and resettlement, and about the residue of human habitation. This work, "Weight", is a prototype for a weighted blanket, the kind that has become popular as a sleep and comfort aid. It is made from wool using crochet and the weights are pottery shards that I have made, deliberately broken, and tumbled smooth to resemble beach shards. The social history of Newfoundland is awash with episodes of settlement and dispersal, a pattern that is closely connected to the ocean and the effects that we have on its resources. "Weight" looks to find something beneficial amid the flotsam.

This is the 3rd day of our artist feature for #OceanWeek. We’re delighted to showcase the work of Spirit Horse Therapeutic Arts .

Spirit Horse Therapeutic Arts is a family run art business that capture the lifestyles of the people who lived off the land and the sea through high quality arts & crafts locally produced by June Farnsworth and Jesse Swift.

Piece # 1: " Unhealthy Oceans" is an Educational Mixed Media Art Exhibit that showcases the effects that rope and plastics have on marine life. Originally from Nova Scotia,we grew up surrounded by the Bay of Fundy and St. Mary's Bay on Long & Brier Island. June and Jesse have both worked as naturalists for whale watching and have seen the negative effects that marine debris and pollution has on our oceans. Entanglements in rope and ghost nets adrift at sea are death traps to marine life, not to mention the digestion of microplastic which usually ends in death. We did this exhibit to bring into focus how ocean debris can affect our oceans and marine life and educate the public about our unhealthy oceans.

Piece #5: History Mural, The Deserter, painted by Jesse Swift displayed at the French Rooms Cultural Center Community Museum and Bread Ovens in Port au Choix.The new ”Deserter” mural painted by local artist Jesse Swift tells the story of the French fishermen who didn’t return to France with their ships at the end of the fishing season. This is our 2nd day of our artist celebration for #OceanWeek. Today we feature Troy Mitchell from Twillingate @spillersrockstudio.

Troy is a printmaker and metal artist from Twillingate, Newfoundland and Labrador. His childhood was spent next to the ocean and he is from a fishing family. Troy's favorite place to be is near and on the ocean. He has been committed to food security volunteer work, with the past decade providing governance leadership for initiatives in 12 countries. Troy's art features the shoreline, ocean, and living things prominently.

Piece #1: Crab With Flounder Remains
This print was designed to reflect the ecosystem on the ocean floor, where crabs emerge to feed on the remains of long-dead fish. It is the nature of life in the ocean where every living thing has its place. Presented in Prussian Blue.

Piece #2: I've Got You
This print features a mother and baby Humpback Whale. It is a sneak peek into life under the ocean's surface, where mother whales are guiding their young. Presented in Prussian Blue.

Piece #3: Whale Tail
This embossed aluminum piece features a Humpback Whale tail. The embossing process allows for depth and texture to be shown, a step closer to the vibrancy of the beautiful living mammal.

Piece #4: Sea
This embossed aluminum piece captures the sea within a circle. It has been created to celebrate the love of all the ocean, and how was gaze upon it with appreciation.

Happy #OceanWeek friends! We are delighted to feature our first artist, Janet Davis from Norton’s Cove in New-Wes-Valley.

The ocean is a source of inspiration for Janet:

“The Atlantic Ocean, just as it slowly shapes the granite around the cove that is my home, has shaped my life. My dad is a sea captain, like his forefathers for many generations, and I took every available opportunity to spend time at sea with him as a youngster. As an adult, I have made my living at sea and cosied up next to the sea. Holidays are spent sailing the sea, and I hike where I can breathe sea air and watch for surfacing humpbacks. My art studio & shop sits in a small cove on the Northeast coast of the island of Newfoundland and most of my interdisciplinary works are inspired by the fish that swim in the waters here as well as the water itself. The ocean is a dear familiar friend that I have chosen to never leave behind.”
