Enjoy our Marine Wildlife Backpacks from land to sea!

We joined @aquaticconservationinitiative on a tour with @seaofwhalesnl to observe marine wildlife! We seen many species, including a sperm whale 🐋 How exciting!

These backpacks have everything you need for a fun coastal adventure for either kids or adults: binoculars, Nature NL guides, a quick visual guide, sightings reporting, and a guidebook. You can find these backpacks at your local public libraries and check it out just like you would a book!

A big thank you to NL Hydro and @theoutfittersnl for supporting this project, to @nlpublibraries for housing our new backpack, and of course to our volunteers and staff who have developed and reviewed guides and provided photos!

Have you ever seen a strange critter and wished you could ask a scientist what it was? iNaturalist is like having professors in your pocket! iNaturalist is an app that allows users to upload evidence of living things and suggests an identification for the organism. Other scientists using the app can either verify or suggest another ID! Want to learn more about iNaturalist and practice your nature identification skills?

Did you know we have several insectivorous plant species here in Newfoundland?!?

The Round-leaved sundew is a wetland species able to digest insects by attracting them to the sticky fluid that is excreted by their glandular tips. The insects get stuck to this sticky substance and are gradually digested by the plant.

How interesting is that!

Stay tuned every Wendsday for wetland features supported for the Aquatic Ecosystems Restoration Fund project funded by Fisheries and Oceans Canada.

Join Nature NL for an evening with Dr. Alfredo Justo – Curator of Botany & Mycology at the New Brunswick Museum.

Like in other parts of North America, many mushroom species occurring in Atlantic Canada are still waiting to be collected and described, and a good number of the supposedly common species are still hiding under incorrect European names, or have not been yet named at all. In this talk we will explore the MycoMap Atlantic Canada project, which aims to document all mushroom species occurring in the region, combining collection-based research, contributions from local groups of naturalists and citizen-scientists and large-scale DNA-sequencing.

This past Saturday, we headed out to St.Shott's for a Bioblitz and nature walk! We got together and shared our identification knowledge and also hilighting edible species that can be foraged in the area!

Happy Wetland Wednesday!

Let's talk the American Eel (Anguilla rostrata) life cycle and their habitat! 🔄

After drifting from the ocean as tiny larvae, American eels (Anguilla rostrata) start their early stages of life in freshwater rivers, lakes, and streams.

American Eels (Anguilla rostrata) grow to adulthood in freshwater. Eels live up to 20-30 years in freshwater, then make their way back to the Sargasso Sea, where they reproduce.

How does freshwater habitats provide for eel's and other migratory freshwater species?

🐜Food (insects, fish, plants)

🏠Shelter from predators

🛏Resting areas for energy storage before their ocean journey

Freshwater systems are vital migratory corridors!

Dams, culverts, and barriers can block these critical pathways, stopping the eel’s life cycle entirely.

Healthy Water = Healthy Eels 🌍
Polluted or degraded freshwater habitats reduce eel survival and growth. Often Neighboring wetlands such as bogs, fens, or marshes help provide a buffer aiding keeping the freshwater ecosystem clean.

Healthy freshwater ecosystems support not just eels, but entire food webs that sustain biodiversity.

You will find us at Quidi Vidi every morning checking for juvenile American Eel (elvers)

In collaboration with @aquaticconservationinitiative and @islandroomspettyharbour we have been awarded funding through @fisheriesoceanscan Habitat Stewardship Program to complete a project focused on the development of an American Eel recruitment protocol for Eastern Newfoundland and Labrador and increase stewardship efforts of Aquatic species at risk until 2028!

Wetland Wednesdays are part of our 3 year Aquatic Restoration Ecosystem Fund Wetland project funded by @fisheriesoceanscan

This past Sunday, we laced up our boots and headed out for a family-friendly nature walk 🌿👣 A great day of exploring, learning, and spotting wildlife together! 🐦🪲🌼

We learned about migratory birds, learned to use binoculars, talked about our birdwatching backpacks, and learned about moss, lichen, ferns, spruce trees, fir trees, pin cherries, mountain ash, spittle bugs, and more! We saw and heard lots of songbirds and enjoyed the beautiful summer weather! See you in July for a guided hike in Bonavista and August for a nature walk in Conception Bay South, keep an eye on our events for all the details!
