🐛✨ Insect Monitoring year 3 Update! Say hi t 🐛✨ Insect Monitoring year 3 Update! Say hi to Tristin, our Environmental Intern, and GreenTeam superstars Emily & Jack who we share in partnership with Aquatic Conservation Initiative! 🧪🦋 They've been helping Sean and Catherine our dedicated insect team by checking the insect malaise traps. Here’s to another season of buzzing discoveries! 🌿 🐛This program is in part of a collaboration with the North American Insect Abundance Network and the MUN Botanical Garden 🦋This data will contribute to an ongoing project investigating insect abundance and responses to temperature across the continent. This project was made possible by Memorial University’s Office of Public Engagement. #InsectMonitoring #GreenTeam #CitizenScience #NatureNerdsUnite #BuzzWorthy #ScienceInTheField #InsectSquad #MUN

Join Nature NL for a fun and informative Moth Nigh Join Nature NL for a fun and informative Moth Night at The @mun_botanical_garden !
This event is free to attend and takes place entirely outside, so dress accordingly.
Discover the fascinating world of moths with biologists Sean McCann and Catherine Scott. We will set up a "moth sheet" with a mercury vapor lamp, which emits light that attracts moths. Watch as moths land on the sheet, allowing for close observation, photography, and identification. Other nocturnal insects, such as caddisflies, lacewings, and midges, will also be drawn to the light, providing a glimpse into the nighttime biodiversity of St. John's. 🦋 We can't wait to see you all there! #Nature #Biodiversity #Moths #Bothaical #NatureNL #MUN

Spillars Cove Loop! We had a blast hiking Spilla Spillars Cove Loop! We had a blast hiking Spillars Cove yesterday! We identified plants, geological features, and many species of seabirds. While we sat and observed the Puffin colony from afar, we got the opportunity to have several Puffins land close to us. It is important to always keep a respectful distance with minimal human disturbance to puffins and other species, never approach, touch, or attempt to feed wild animals. ☘🕵️‍♀️ Last week, we teamed up with t ☘🕵️‍♀️ Last week, we teamed up with the @girlguidesnl - Girl Guides at their camp for an outdoor adventure! We kicked things off with a nature walk and scavenger hunt 🐾🌼 checking off all sorts of cool finds along the trail. One of the fun things we spotted on our walk was, Bunchberry (Cornus canadensis)!
At first glance, it looks like it has big white petals, but those are actually modified leaves called bracts! These clever adaptations help attract pollinators to the tiny flowers tucked in the center. Nature is full of surprises! 🌸🐝 Then it was time to become stream biologists! 💧🔬 We pretended that the buckets were our streams, capturing macroinvertebrates, identifying our finds, and even processed real data like the scientists we are! A big thanks to the Girl Guides for having us ,we had a blast! ☘ #NatureWalk #GirlGuides #StreamScience #Wetlands #OutdoorEducation #Macroinvertebrates #CitizenScience #NatureNL #AERF
