Nature Nook is a monthly hands-on session to interact with real specimens like seal pelts, skulls, whale baleen, antlers, moose fur, and a variety of rocks and minerals. Join us to learn more about nature and ask our volunteers all your questions about Newfoundland and Labrador’s wildlife! Sessions will resume in January (last Sunday of the month)!

Included in the cost of admission.

For caribou:
-Support initiatives that protect migration routes and limit development in sensitive areas.
- Respect their space—give them room to roam, especially during migration.

For snowshoe hare:
- Preserve forested areas and support efforts to reduce deforestation.
- Keep natural habitats intact to ensure they have space to thrive.

Caribou and snowshoe hare are herbivores and depend on a healthy environments and wilderness to survive. Avoiding disturbed areas is becoming increasingly difficult due to habitat loss and climate change.

Habitat loss:
- Roads, trails, and human development can disrupt migration and lead predators straight to caribou.
- Noise, like dogs or airplanes, can stress animals, and roads put them at risk of vehicle collisions

Climate change:
- With changes in the timing of snowfall, snowshoe hares can experience camouflage mismatch if the color of their fur doesn't match their environment.
- Rising temperatures also bring more wildfires, destroying their homes and food sources.

A warm thank you to everyone who came out to our annual Holiday Hike! 15 of us hiked Pippy Park, stopping to ogle at lichen, moss, trees, sheep's laurel, Labrador tea and even some slime mold! Halfway through we warmed up with hot chocolate and cookies, swapping stories about holiday traditions and cutting down Christmas trees🌲

It's #WetlandWednesday which means it's time to me

It's #WetlandWednesday which means it's time to meet the woodland caribou and the snowshoe hare!

Woodland Caribou:
- Can be found in forests, peatlands and limestone barrens.
- Did you know Newfoundland is home to the southernmost caribou in the world?
- Caribou, called reindeer in Eurasia, are built for the wild—covered in thick fur and lightning-fast, they can run up to 80 km/h!
- Both males and females grow antlers. Which of Santa’s reindeer do you think most resembles a woodland caribou?

Snowshoe Hare:
- Can be found in boreal forests, uplands and wetlands.
- Named for their large feet that support them in the snow.
- Originally from Labrador, they were introduced to Newfoundland in 1860.
- They’re masters of disguise, they change coat seasonally - white in winter and reddish-brown in summer.
-These speedy hares can run up to 30 km/h. Good luck trying to catch them!

Last week we had the chance to visit St. Mark’s

Last week we had the chance to visit St. Mark’s and Anthony Paddon Elementary to talk to students about wetlands, water quality, macroinvertebrates, Newfoundland biodiversity and riverbed management!

The most popular activity was our rapid “stream” assessment where the students were given their own personal stream and had to sample, sort and count the macroinvertebrate biodiversity 🪰🦟🪲🦗🪱🐌

This is part of a 3 year wetland project funded by @fisheriesoceanscan

🦆The goal of the project is to collect baseline data of bird activity along the coastal regions of the Avalon Peninsula to inform oil spill preparedness and industrial development proposals.

Last week we hosted an Insects for Kids event at t

Last week we hosted an Insects for Kids event at the Majorie Mews Library and had 15 kids attend!🐝🦋🐛

🐞The kids observed and handled live and preserved insects and spiders, learned about insect anatomy and life stages, and designed and built their own imaginary insects.

🕷️We also read a story called Nefertiti the Spidernaut together—a true story about a spider that traveled to the International Space Station and learned to hunt for flies in zero gravity.

We had 20 people attend the online talk and learn about how garter snakes are semi-aquatic but likely did not swim over to the island, what they eat and what habitat they like🐍

Happy #WetlandWednesday Meet the Common Garter Snake🐍

They usually have green, greyish-brown, or black bodies with three light stripes: one down their back and two on the sides. Their scales feel a bit rough because of a ridge in the center.

🌿They can be found in many places across Canada, like wetlands but they can also live in city parks and ditches. They love areas near water, where they hunt for frogs and other food. They arrived in Newfoundland after 2010 and can be spotted on the west coast.

❄️During the winter, garter snakes hibernate together in warm places, away from the frost. In the spring, males hang around these spots to mate with the females when they come out. They are most active during the day and eat things like frogs, earthworms, slugs, fish, small animals, and even bird eggs.

Even though they aren’t originally from Newfoundland, common garter snakes are great at adapting and can live alongside other wildlife and people! Learn more about garter snakes in the province at our public talk on November 21st!

🐸For the month of November we will be spending

🐸For the month of November we will be spending #WetlandWednesday learning more about amphibians and reptiles in the province - and today we are meeting the green frog.

🐍To start, no amphibians or reptiles are native to the island of Newfoundland, although there are a few species found in Labrador (for example the Blue Spotted Salamander).

🪲Green frogs can be green, brown, or olive and often sport dark spots and banded legs. These frogs are active day and night, hunting a wide range of prey, from beetles to other small frogs!

🌿Green frogs are often found in three main types of aquatic habitats: temporary wetlands, streams, and swamps. They prefer areas with high soil moisture, some woody debris, and fewer trees, with water cover being essential.

❄️In the winter they go through what’s called brumation, which means they find a nice spot in mud underwater where the temperature never goes below freezing and there’s plenty of oxygen until spring.

🥚Females lay up to 5,000 eggs in floating clusters, which hatch within a week. Tadpoles overwinter and reach maturity in 1-2 years. They can live 4 to 5 years.

❗️Threats: Though adaptable, green frogs face threats from the loss of wetlands and shorelines that are their habitats to pollution, road mortality, pesticides and herbicides, higher temperatures and diseases like ranavirus.

🐸Green frogs may be common, but they remind us of the importance of preserving wetlands for all wildlife!
