In 1943 a secret military mission was despatched by the Crown to set up the first permanent British scientific, exploration and sovereignty bases on the continent. The Eagle and Trepassey and their local crews were requisitioned from St. John’s to provide logistic support. Join Tony Dickinson from Nature NL as he shares how this Newfoundland presence was central to the success of the mission, its post-war expansion into the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (later British Antarctic Survey), and to the continuation of field science in what is now the British Antarctic Territory.
