We’re seeking Bank Swallow sightings across Newf We’re seeking Bank Swallow sightings across Newfoundland! We are collecting both new and historical observations from the public to help create a province-wide sightings list. Our goal is to later confirm and possibly monitor these breeding sites. This information will support efforts to monitor Bank Swallow populations by collecting bassline data, as this species is currently listed as at risk and up-to-date information on confirmed nesting sites are limited. Bank Swallows nest on sandy, near-vertical slopes (steeper than 70°), typically along riverbanks or natural coastal bluffs. They also make use of human-made habitats such as gravel pits, quarry's, road cuts, and other exposed sandy faces. Historical data shows many former nesting locations across the province that are no longer being monitored. While we know there is excellent ongoing work on the island’s West Coast, we’re hoping to learn more about sightings outside that region as well with particular interest in but not limited to the Avalon Peninsula. If you’ve seen Bank Swallows whether recently or in the past we would love to hear from you! Your observations can help fill critical knowledge gaps and support conservation efforts.
Please contact us as naturenl@naturenl.ca with any information you may have along with supporting information such as location, date, and photos if they are available. Find out more about Bank Swallows here: https://www.canada.ca/en/environment-climate-change/services/species-risk-public-registry/residence-descriptions/bank-swallow.html #BirdFactFriday #NatureNL #NatureCanada #NatureHood #VolunteerScience #Newfoundland #BirdsNL
