We’re in mid-fall, slowly creeping into winter. We’re in mid-fall, slowly creeping into winter. Some wetland plants will partially decompose and become peat, while others have special adaptations that allow them to stay evergreen through the harsh fall and winter conditions. When we think of evergreens, many of us picture towering Spruce and Fir trees. But wetlands are home to a variety of smaller evergreen shrubs that stay vibrant and green throughout the year. Some of these species include Leatherleaf (Chamaedaphne calyculata), named for its tough, leathery leaves; Common Labrador Tea (Rhododendron groenlandicum); Large Cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon); and Sheep Laurel (Kalmia angustifolia). These resilient plants remain green year-round however there are many other species residing in wetlands with these features as well. Evergreens don’t take a break for winter! Their waxy, tough leaves help them hold onto water and stay green year-round, even through snow and frost. Next Wednesday we will go into more depth into the science behind how evergreens are able to remain green year round and how it helps these species live in harsh conditions. Due to recent funding changes and shifting timelines, including the closure of the Office of Public Engagement (OPE) program at MUN that has supported this event in past years, we’ve decided to postpone to next spring so we can deliver the best experience possible. Our completely volunteer-run steering committee is working to ensure this important event continues, as our goal remains to offer strong value to participants, and to align with the evolving priorities and realities we are all navigating. While in Ottawa for Nature on the Hill, we were fo While in Ottawa for Nature on the Hill, we were fortunate to attend the NatureHood Community of Practice with many great partner groups across Canada who are involved with NatureHood. This was a great educational opportunity to implement new ideas that engage youth with nature. NatureHood is an initiative of @naturecanada_ , supported by Environment and Climate Change Canada. Striving to connect kids, families, newcomers, and marginalized communities to nearby nature. "Your "NatureHood" is any place you go to connect with the earth’s natural wonders — from watching a bee pollinate a flower, to feeding wild birds, to witnessing the trees change with the passing of the seasons." #NatureHood #NatureEducation
This week, Nature Newfoundland and Labrador joined This week, Nature Newfoundland and Labrador joined over 70 of the country’s leading nature advocates on Parliament Hill for #NatureOnTheHill! 🌿 We met with MPs, Ministers, and the Secretary of State to discuss how investing in nature strengthens our communities, economies, and Canada’s identity. From our province, we had the pleasure of meeting MP Carol Anstey, member of the Standing Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development, and The Honourable Joanne Thompson, Member of Parliament and Minister of Fisheries. We also spoke briefly with The Honourable Steven Guilbeault, Minister of Canadian Identity and Culture and Minister responsible for Official Languages, formerly Minister of Environment and Climate Change. A huge thank you to all the government representatives who took the time to meet with us! We’re counting on you to be a voice for our province and for Canada’s future. We were thrilled to have the opportunity to also connect with passionate, like-minded environmental organizations from across Newfoundland and Labrador and throughout Canada. These conversations allow us to share unique challenges, exchange ideas, and strengthen our collective efforts to protect nature. A heartfelt thank-you to @naturecanada_ for creating this incredible space to bring these vital conversations to life. 🌎💚 #NatureCanada #NatureNL #VoicesForNature #VoicesForCanada #NatureOnTheHill2025 #NOTH We will be tagging organizations and updating photo descriptions throughout the day. We hear the Toronto Blue Jays have been doing amaz We hear the Toronto Blue Jays have been doing amazing lately. You can find a connection to nature all over Canada from sports, arts, and other social connections. It sure got us thinking about Blue jays, So we wanted to share some facts with you! 🐦💙Although Blue jays are easily recognized by their bright blue feathers, they are surprisingly not actually blue. Their vivid colour comes from a unique feather structure that distorts light, reflecting it in a way that makes the plumage appear blue. Each blue jay also sports a distinctive black bridle across its face, nape, and throat! A unique marking that may help individuals recognize one another! Want to read more about the Blue Jay? Check out this article from Nature Canada: https://naturecanada.ca/news/blog/all-about-blue-jays-are-they-actually-blue/ This media is part of our Birding Without Barriers program, supported by NatureHood, a Nature Canada initiative. #BlueJays #Birdfacts #Nature #Newfoundland #NatureNL #Naturehood #BirdFactFriday

Yesterday we headed to Chamberlains Park in Concep Yesterday we headed to Chamberlains Park in Conception Bay South for a guided nature walk, where we chatted about bats and took time to identify the nature around us. 🦇🌿 Some of our observations: We compared two species of fern one that has spores on the underside of its leaves and one that contains spores on a modified frond. We identified many species of trees and had the opportunity to discuss which were cultivated versus naturally growing in the area without human help. We also observed, from a distance, a bird box where a black-capped chickadee had made its home. And of course, we talked about bats: what species live here, what they eat, and where they roost. We observed a bat box and discussed how modified habitats like these are important for their survival. We even took the opportunity to bring home some books from the Little Free Library. Thank you to everyone who came out, and a huge thank you to our volunteer bat expert, Lia! 🦇 Our guided walks are supported by the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts and Recreation's Active NL grant and by NatureHood, a Nature Canada initiative. #Guidedwalks #Familywalks #NatureNL #ExploreNL #Naturehood
