Join us for a family friendly guided walk around K

Join us for a family friendly guided walk around Kent's Pond where we will be chatting all things nature. This event is free to attend. All ages welcome and no need to have children with you. This is a slow-paced (kid pace) hike and we have lots of time to chat about things we find and see, such as plants, birds, mosses, lichens, tracks, etc.

Meet in the Confederation Building parking lot off Prince Philip Drive, at the northern tip, closest to the pond (see picture in posts). Parking is free in this lot.
Please dress for the weather, the trails are wet, snowy, and slippery. Hiking footwear (or warm winter boots in wintery weather) is recommended. By participating you assume full responsibility for risks arising out of or related to participation in this event.

During our activity we spoke about species that live in arctic waters that visit Newfoundland and Labrador such as orcas, harp seals, arctic tern, and polar bears.

A group of 15 people showed up to brave the cold w

A group of 15 people showed up to brave the cold with us at our Nature Walk this past weekend. We spoke about the different types of trees and shrubs, lichens, and animals, and even found snowshoe hair footprints! We also saw bird, squirrel and rat prints!

Our next Nature Walk is scheduled for February 22nd - see you there!

Happy #WetlandWednesday ! This week is a little extra special because this Sunday (February 2nd) is World Wetlands Day!

So what is a wetland? Wetlands can broadly be defined as an area that is wet for most of the year.

Wetlands cover 13% of Canada's terrestrial area and are an important ecosystem in Newfoundland and Labrador that create habitat for wildlife, provide flood prevention, improve water quality, and offer recreational enjoyment. This year's theme is Wetlands and Human Wellbeing!

Do you know your wetlands?
Fens: peat based, wet from drainage and groundwater
Bogs: spongy peat floor covered by a thick carpet of sphagnum moss
Open shallow fresh water
Swamps: wetland with woody plants
Marshes: wetland with emergent soft-stemmed plants

We talked about the layers of soil in our terrariums! For the aquariums we compared it to a wetland, and the plants and animals that live there! We talked about species we see in Newfoundland and Ukraine.🐛🐦🐌🐝
