What: Walk to Mistaken Point with Nature enthusiasts (Nature NL)
When: Thursday July 12, meet at 930 am at the parking lot by the Bulk Barn/Lawtons in Mt. Pearl to share rides to Portugal Cove South. This is an almost all day event. We will stop for a picnic on the way.
Who: People interested to get out and see Mistaken Point.

Mistaken Point Ecological Reserve
Home to fossils of the oldest, complex
multicellular life forms found anywhere on Earth
To view fossils in the Reserve visitors must take a guided tour.

Space on interpretive tours is limited
– Tours are generally offered daily at 1pm (early May to mid October) and begin at the Edge of Avalon Interpretive Centre in Portugal Cove South (located on Route 10, the Irish Loop Drive – a 2 hour drive south of St. John’s).
– Tour involves a 6 km round-trip hike (3 km one-way) and it takes approximately 45 minutes (one-way) to reach the fossil site.
– Time involved is 3 ½ – 4 hours, including a 30 minute (one-way) vehicle ride to reach the trail.
– Return time is approximately 5pm at the Edge of Avalon Interpretive Centre, Portugal Cove South.
– Proper hiking footwear and rainwear are recommended.
– Sandals are not permitted
– Trail is muddy and wet in sections.
– There is a small river crossing with stepping stones to walk on.
– Trail is rated as an easy hiking trail; however there are a few small hills and inclines. The overall distance (6 km) may pose the greatest challenge for some.
– Footwear is removed and cloth booties are supplied for walking on the fossil bearing surfaces to prevent erosion.
– It is a good idea to bring water and a snack
– Dogs are not permitted on guided tours.
– Please note there are no facilities in the Reserve once the tour commences.
– To confirm a reservation, all tour participants must arrive at the Edge of Avalon Interpretive Centre prior to 1pm on the day of the tour.
– All guided tours are offered free-of-charge through Parks and Natural Areas Division by trained Park Interpretation Technicians.
– The Edge of Avalon Interpretive Centre is owned and operated by a not-for-profit community organization and admission to view exhibits at the Centre is by donation.
