Happy World Wetlands Day! To celebrate the wetlands in our province, Nature NL is launching a wetland photo contest! Enter to win prizes valued at $120, publication in our 2026 Wetland Calendar and a feature in our annual photo night.

A group of 15 people showed up to brave the cold w

A group of 15 people showed up to brave the cold with us at our Nature Walk this past weekend. We spoke about the different types of trees and shrubs, lichens, and animals, and even found snowshoe hair footprints! We also saw bird, squirrel and rat prints!

Our next Nature Walk is scheduled for February 22nd - see you there!

Happy #WetlandWednesday ! This week is a little extra special because this Sunday (February 2nd) is World Wetlands Day!

So what is a wetland? Wetlands can broadly be defined as an area that is wet for most of the year.

Wetlands cover 13% of Canada's terrestrial area and are an important ecosystem in Newfoundland and Labrador that create habitat for wildlife, provide flood prevention, improve water quality, and offer recreational enjoyment. This year's theme is Wetlands and Human Wellbeing!

Do you know your wetlands?
Fens: peat based, wet from drainage and groundwater
Bogs: spongy peat floor covered by a thick carpet of sphagnum moss
Open shallow fresh water
Swamps: wetland with woody plants
Marshes: wetland with emergent soft-stemmed plants

We talked about the layers of soil in our terrariums! For the aquariums we compared it to a wetland, and the plants and animals that live there! We talked about species we see in Newfoundland and Ukraine.🐛🐦🐌🐝

This past weekend we had a lot of fun at Nature Nook @therooms_nl !

Nature Nook is a monthly hands-on session to interact with real specimens like seal pelts, skulls, whale baleen, antlers, moose fur, and a variety of rocks and minerals. Join us to learn more about nature and ask our volunteers all your questions about Newfoundland and Labrador’s wildlife! Sessions will resume in January (last Sunday of the month)!

Included in the cost of admission.

For caribou:
-Support initiatives that protect migration routes and limit development in sensitive areas.
- Respect their space—give them room to roam, especially during migration.

For snowshoe hare:
- Preserve forested areas and support efforts to reduce deforestation.
- Keep natural habitats intact to ensure they have space to thrive.
