Happy #wetlandwednesday Wetlands are often termed Happy #wetlandwednesday Wetlands are often termed "Nature's sponge" 🧽 because they soak up and hold water during heavy rain falls or snow melt just like a sponge. Slowly releasing that water over time, which helps prevent flooding, keeps spreams flowing during dry periods, and recharges groundwater. By storing and balancing water, wetlands protect communities, support wildlife, and keep ecosystems healthy. Join us October 16th at 7:30 PM for a public talk Join us October 16th at 7:30 PM for a public talk on Restoring Healthy Coastal Habitats with Marsha Clarke. 🌿🌊 Marsha Clarke is a Research Technologist with the Centre for Fisheries Ecosystem Research at the Marine Institute in St. John's, NL. Since 2019, she has been working as a lead technologist on coastal restoration efforts in Placentia Bay, focusing primarily on the green crab mitigation and eelgrass restoration.
Her talked, titled: A Blue Thumb: A Story of 8 years of Coastal Restoration Work in Placentia Bay NL, describes the challenges and successes faced by her team as they have worked to fight against the effects of invasive species, plant underwater gardens to restore lost habitat, and the natural ecosystems of the intertidal zones around Placentia Bay. #EelGrass #PublicTalks #HealthyEcosystems #OceanSciences #MarineInstitue #NewfoudlandandLabrador
CITO World Cleanup Day highlights! Saturday we j CITO World Cleanup Day highlights! Saturday we joined Stewardship Association of Municipalities and The Town of Portugal Cove - St.Philip's at Voisey's Brook Park to do our part in cleaning the natural spaces that give back to the community, while also searching for the many Geocaches hidden along the trail! 🌍 A big thank you to everyone who joined us on Saturday! Happy #WetlandWednesday 🌲 Wetlands are an ever Happy #WetlandWednesday 🌲 Wetlands are an everyday part of our lives. Often quietly present, sometimes right under our noses. They appear in guides, novels, and stories, both directly and indirectly. To celebrate these vital ecosystems, we came together to highlight some guides and novels that have taught us about wetlands, made us think about their importance, or were set in these unique landscapes. The connections aren’t always obvious, but the impact is real. We’ve put together a list of some of our favorite wetland themed or referenced guides and novels, hoping to inspire you to notice the small things that hold great value. 📚Have you read a novel or guide with a wetland theme? Share it in the comments! Your recommendation could be featured as a “Wetland Fan Pick” in our next lineup. Happy #wetlandWednesday! We are wrapping up this Happy #wetlandWednesday! We are wrapping up this seasons AERF BioBlitz series. This project was initiated to monitor and promote wetland's in Bonavista, St.Shott's and Swift Current. We chose these three communities because they represent different eco-regions that you can find within the province. All of these wetlands feed into watersheds that provide habitat for vulnerable and endangered species such as Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) and American eel (Anguilla rostrata). 👉 Swipe through to see some of the incredible species we documented this year! Of course, there are many more species still waiting to be recorded. We look forward to continuing this project next year with the ongoing collection of data alongside community members and our project partner, Aquatic Conservation Initiative. 💧✨ This project is funded and supported by the Aquatic Ecosystems Restoration Fund (AERF) made possible by @FisheriesOceansCAN In efforts of restoration and conservation of aquatic ecosystems #iNaturalist #BioBlitz #AERF #watersheds #Wetlands #protectwetlands @aquaticconservationinitiative
