Spillars Cove Loop! We had a blast hiking Spilla Spillars Cove Loop! We had a blast hiking Spillars Cove yesterday! We identified plants, geological features, and many species of seabirds. While we sat and observed the Puffin colony from afar, we got the opportunity to have several Puffins land close to us. It is important to always keep a respectful distance with minimal human disturbance to puffins and other species, never approach, touch, or attempt to feed wild animals. We started the day off with a guided hike, and then we headed to the Union House Arts studio where Inbal Newman hosted a rubbing workshop where we got the opportunity to create art with the specimens we collected. β˜˜πŸ•΅οΈβ€β™€οΈ Last week, we teamed up with t β˜˜πŸ•΅οΈβ€β™€οΈ Last week, we teamed up with the @girlguidesnl - Girl Guides at their camp for an outdoor adventure! We kicked things off with a nature walk and scavenger hunt 🐾🌼 checking off all sorts of cool finds along the trail. One of the fun things we spotted on our walk was, Bunchberry (Cornus canadensis)!
At first glance, it looks like it has big white petals, but those are actually modified leaves called bracts! These clever adaptations help attract pollinators to the tiny flowers tucked in the center. Nature is full of surprises! 🌸🐝 Then it was time to become stream biologists! πŸ’§πŸ”¬ We pretended that the buckets were our streams, capturing macroinvertebrates, identifying our finds, and even processed real data like the scientists we are! A big thanks to the Girl Guides for having us ,we had a blast! ☘ #NatureWalk #GirlGuides #StreamScience #Wetlands #OutdoorEducation #Macroinvertebrates #CitizenScience #NatureNL #AERF

Have you ever seen a strange critter and wished you could ask a scientist what it was? iNaturalist is like having professors in your pocket! iNaturalist is an app that allows users to upload evidence of living things and suggests an identification for the organism. Other scientists using the app can either verify or suggest another ID! Want to learn more about iNaturalist and practice your nature identification skills? Register using the following link:

Happy #WetlandWednesday Did you know we have sev Happy #WetlandWednesday Did you know we have several insectivorous plant species here in Newfoundland?!? The Round-leaved sundew is a wetland species able to digest insects by attracting them to the sticky fluid that is excreted by their glandular tips. The insects get stuck to this sticky substance and are gradually digested by the plant. How interesting is that! Stay tuned every Wendsday for wetland features supported for the Aquatic Ecosystems Restoration Fund project funded by Fisheries and Oceans Canada. #WetlandWednesday #reel #AERF #wetlands #boreal

Join Nature NL for an evening with Dr. Alfredo Jus Join Nature NL for an evening with Dr. Alfredo Justo – Curator of Botany & Mycology at the New Brunswick Museum. Like in other parts of North America, many mushroom species occurring in Atlantic Canada are still waiting to be collected and described, and a good number of the supposedly common species are still hiding under incorrect European names, or have not been yet named at all. In this talk we will explore the MycoMap Atlantic Canada project, which aims to document all mushroom species occurring in the region, combining collection-based research, contributions from local groups of naturalists and citizen-scientists and large-scale DNA-sequencing.
