Want to know why some rivers in NL are brown? Join Want to know why some rivers in NL are brown? Join us for an evening with PhD candidate Kavi Heerah to learn more! About the talk:
The rivers of Newfoundland especially the rivers found in the barrens have high amounts of carbon and iron. This is what gives the water that dark brown colour. We know that the carbon from the barrens can carry more iron than other rivers but the why and the how is still being investigated. Our group has been sampling the Seal Cove River every month since 2020 hoping to learn more about the unique carbon in the rivers of Newfoundland. On this talk we’ll discuss: 1) what exactly gives the rivers of NL its brown colour, 2) how we can study the carbon in the river, and 3) why the rivers from the barrens matter for ocean productivity. #PublicTalk #Freshwater #HealthHabitats #WHC #Nature #Science
